What is each test actually for?
Use PTE Academic when an institution or an Australian, New Zealand or UK visa asks for proof of academic English. Use PTE Core when you’re applying for Canadian permanent residence through Express Entry or a Provincial Nominee Program, where IRCC maps your scores to CLB levels.

How do format and difficulty differ?
Both tests are computer-based and AI-scored, but PTE Academic leans more academic with tasks like Summarize Written Text and Write Essay while PTE Core uses more everyday, general-English tasks suited to living and working in Canada. Neither is ‘harder’ overall; they target different English.
If your English is strong for study, PTE Academic plays to that. If your strength is practical, day-to-day communication, PTE Core’s task style may feel more natural. Either way, the scoring engine rewards clear, specific, well-organised responses not memorised templates.
