Quick answer –

Yes, IRCC has accepted PTE Core since 30 January 2024 for economic immigration. You can use it for Express Entry (FSW, CEC and FST), Provincial Nominee Programs, and citizenship. The one common exception is the Student Direct Stream (SDS), which does not accept PTE Core. Your scores convert to CLB levels.

Is PTE Core accepted by IRCC?

Yes. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) added PTE Core as an approved English test for economic immigration on 30 January 2024. Since then it has been a fully valid alternative to other accepted English tests for Canadian permanent-residence pathways and citizenship.

If you’ve seen older posts saying ‘PTE isn’t accepted in Canada’, they predate this change. The test you need is specifically PTE Core not PTE Academic for these immigration pathways.

Is PTE Core accepted for Express Entry?

Yes, PTE Core is accepted across all three Express Entry programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW), the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) and the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FST). Your four scores convert to CLB levels, and your CLB drives your CRS language points.

Is PTE Core accepted for Provincial Nominee Programs?

Yes, PTE Core is accepted for Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs), which provinces and territories use to nominate candidates with the skills they need. Specific streams set their own CLB requirements, so check the language level for the exact PNP stream you’re targeting.

Because PNPs vary widely by province and occupation, treat PTE Core as accepted but confirm the precise CLB each stream wants. A provincial nomination can add a decisive boost to your overall profile.

Is PTE Core accepted for citizenship and work permits?

PTE Core is accepted by IRCC for citizenship language proof and within the economic-immigration pathways that lead to and support permanent residence. As always, confirm the exact requirement for the specific program you’re applying under, since language rules differ by stream.

The headline to hold onto: across IRCC’s economic and citizenship pathways, PTE Core is a recognised, accepted test it sits alongside the other approved English options.

Where is PTE Core NOT accepted?

The key exception is the Student Direct Stream (SDS) for study permits, which does not accept PTE Core. If you’re applying to study in Canada through SDS, you’ll need a different accepted English test PTE Core is for economic immigration, not the SDS student route.

⚠️Don’t use PTE Core for SDS

PTE Core is accepted for PR, PNPs and citizenship but not for the Student Direct Stream. For SDS, check IRCC’s current list of accepted tests.
